Get Rid Of Those Fleas

Fleas are probably the number one irritant for a dogs skin. More than likely, if you do not treat your pet and home from fleas, your pet pooch spends a lot of time scratching. This is not only uncomfortable for your pet, but can also cause skin problems as well. Some dogs actually have an intense allergy to fleas, while others will create more of a problem from excessive biting and scratching.

There are many different flea killing products on the market. From flea sprays to flea collars, your guaranteed to have a wide selection of choices. It is important however, that you pick a product that actually works. Many of the flea control products on the market fall way to short of the things they claim to be able to do. Rather than spending an obscene amount of money trying products that do not work, check with your vet and ask them what product they would recommend to get rid of those pesky fleas.

Give Them A Bath

Bathing your dog will not only help to get rid of fleas, but can also help skin irritation. There are many different shampoos on the market to help soothe a dogs irritated skin. Bathing should be done in moderation as well. A dog needs the natural oils that are present on it's skin, and excessive bathing can wash those oils away and actually make the skin problem worse.

If your dog has problem skin, choose a shampoo that is mild, and made from natural ingredients. Shampoos with too many chemicals and deodorants can cause more irritation to your dogs skin, possibly creating more of a problem for you to deal with.

Watch What They Eat

A dogs food can also play a part in the condition of their skin and coat. Believe it or not, there are a large amount of dogs that are allergic to corn and soy. These products are often the main ingredients in many brands of dog food. Choosing a high quality dog food with meat as the main ingredient rather than corn or soy, can greatly help to improve the condition of your dogs skin.

Some companies manufacture dog food that contain ingredients to help improve your dogs skin and coat. These foods work great for additional skin care help, providing their main ingredient is not corn or soy.

Treat Your Home and Lawn

Killing the fleas that are in your home and in your yard will also help to combat the flea problem which will of course, help improve your dogs skin condition. There are many different products available for treating your home and yard, from flea sprays and bombs to powders. Some of these products do however contain risks to your family and the environment so it is important that you read all labels before making a purchase.

A simple way to help with flea problems in your home, is to vacuum often, and wash your dogs bedding frequently. This will help to not only eliminate fleas, but also flea eggs, and get rid of many of the fleas that cause your dogs such problems.

Get Your Dog Tested

If skin problems persist, it may be a good idea to take your dog to the vet to get them allergy tested. Like humans, dogs can be allergic to many different things. Some of the more common dog allergies are fleas, food, grass and dirt. Yes, grass and dirt. By knowing what your dog is allergic to, you can help limit its contact with that item. Some allergies can also be treated by medication, so that your dogs outbreaks will not be so severe.
